In comparison with my first artefact, the scene in the second one is been lid using a high key lighting technique and I was trying to achieve an early in the morning shot. At first I thought of changing my shot and choose a different area of the scene as my final render. I experimented with some new shots and elements in the scene as well as lighting. I tried different angles with my light in order to achieve long soft shadows and simulate an early morning hour of the day. After a lot of test renders I’ve decided to use the same shot from the first artefact so that I have the same shot, but showing different hours of the day. With my shot in place I carried on with the lighting, testing out different angles and trying to get interesting long shadows. After a few test renders I decided on the angle and intensity of my light. However, the picture was still too flat and I had only a few shadows in my scene and the scene looked like it was in the middle of nowhere. Since my scene is set to a city environment I thought to put a building opposite my shot in order to get some shadows from that building, in my scene. Furthermore, I removed the characters from the scene and I closed the doors of the restaurant to give the sense that no one is out on the street at this time so it has to be early in the morning and not late afternoon (the angle of the light and shadows indicate that its either early in the morning or late afternoon). Finally I added a car opposite my scene to capture its reflection in the big restaurant window and give some more interest to the final image. I also used depth of field to give more sense of depth.

Through my first Artefact I experimented with variations of the three-point lighting technique. The scene I used has various elements and two characters and helped me to experiment with lighting a lot. Firstly, I applied the materials to the scene and afterwards I put the lights. This allowed me to see how light reacts with the different materials in the scene and get a more clear approximation on how my end result would look like.I started the lighting process with the strongest lights (key lights) first. These lights are consisted of the lights inside the restaurant and the street lights. By putting bright lights inside allowed me to show the details in the restaurant and also created a thin shine on the back of both characters separating them from their backgrounds and giving some depth to the scene. Also, I put the lights in a particular height so they give a long shadow to the characters, mainly on the second character (the little animal on the bin). In addition the street lights provided the illumination for the exterior of my scene, showing more details from the outside space. Most of the street lights were situated in the foreground, where I wanted the attention to be, but I also put one on the house at the back of my shot to add some interest to the background plane as well. Afterwards, I added some fill lights to lid some really dark areas in my scene and make the main character (hippo, Moomin) pop out more. Finally I used some glow shaders for the windows, menu and the sign on the right and depth of field to enhance the sense of depth in the final shot and make it look less flat.

The following picture is the first artefact for the practical solution of my research project. I'm researching the role of lighting in CG world and how can enhance the visual storytelling for cinematic purposes. The following scene is been modelled by Yotam Rien and it was part of a lighting competition. I did the texturing, lighting, rendering and composite everything in photoshop after rendering. I used a variation of the three point lighting technique and I was aiming to focus the attention in the foreground where the two characters are. Also I used some extra lights to further isolate the main character (the hippo, Moomin). I have already received some comments from the focus group I had on Monday, but feel free to make any comments. They are always welcome and they help me improve my work!

I am doing an animation for encouraging the cancer funding for the Alumni Association. The idea is simple. The animation will start with some cells floating around and then forming the NTU logo. The NTU logo appears nice and clean. Then some cancer cells will start floating around and they will stuck on NTU logo infecting it with cancer. At this point, I ll rewind the video back to the point where NTU logo was nice and clean. Finally a massage will pop up in the end, encouraging funding.Here some shots from the animation

μικρό αγόρι μπλέ

Once upon a green moon, [when sublunar seeds schedule to dry clean the soot]

Clucks & feathers gone cuckoo,
Gallus-gallus bought the farm, by now was toasting to its stewing charm.

Little boy blue with a grumbling balloon,
Swaddled in ma's frock, slouched on a stool.
Languidly whirling wands, a skew-
endlessly ogling a flavorless drool

when noon came to tock,
with see-sawing prongs
he forked and he clocked,
butchered and botched
the poultry attuned to a fluttering limbo.

Feast came to a halt as he suckled and crackled his greasy paws
Eyeballing the platter where a wishing bone lay:
It counted headless chickens parading unarrayed

Soap licking dishes, boy bubbled with wishes,
till pendelums dazed & he went out to play.
In scrambled trots he reached the plum tree orchard,

The principles of Animation

I was doing a bit of a research on animation last week, and I came across with some important principles. Hope you' ll find it useful...

1) Anticipation: A preliminary action that sets up a primary action.
2) Squash and Stretch: No matter how much an object deforms, it must always maintain the same volume or mass.
3) Follow - Through: Something in motion almost never comes to a complete and sudden stop.
4) Overlapping Action: Not everything happens all at the same time.
5) Secondary Action: An action that's a direct result of another action.
6) Exaggeration: Ensures that the audience catches/notices the important movement or gesture.
7) Staging: Objects should be positioned so that they're quickly detected and easily understood.

We’re pleased to announce that the long awaited 2011 Autodesk products have now been officially released and there are loads of new features and enhancements in these new versions.

After 18 months of development, Autodesk Maya gets some pretty serious additions, all wrapped up in a complete UI over-haul. Autodesk 3ds max 2011 has some cool new features, including new hardware rendering with Quicksilver, which we are pretty keen to check out. There are loads of new enhancements for MotionBuilder, Mudbox and Softimage as well.

US, March 8, 2010 - IMAX Corporation announced that Alice in Wonderland, directed by Tim Burton and starring Johnny Depp, Anne Hathaway and Mia Wasikowska, posted record opening weekend results, with 188 domestic IMAX theaters contributing $12.1 million of the film's overall opening gross of an estimated $116.2 million during the weekend from Friday, March 5 through Sunday March 7, which represents an approximate 27 percent increase over IMAX's previous opening weekend record. The IMAX release contributed approximately 10.5 percent of the overall domestic box on an estimated 2.5 percent of the total screens, and IMAX theateres posted a domestic per screen average of $64,362.

Internationally, the film's IMAX release generated approximately $3.1 million from 53 IMAX theaters, bringing the global IMAX opening weekend total to $15.2 million. Kevin Lanning started creating art at a very early age drawing and sculpting and he graduated with a degree in computer animation. Thanks to online exposure Kevin received commission work including character art for several commercials. This led to his discovery by Epic Games where he was hired as a full-time artist to create art assets for their next-gen game technology Unreal Engine 3.

My subject for the interactive media project is brain! I' m trying to make a quiz about left and right brain and through the quiz people can discover which part of their brain they use the most. I did some research so I could choose the correct questions and hopefully I' ll be accurate enough in the end. Now what is mean if you use your left or right brain the most? Right and Left hemisphere of the brain control two different "modes" of thinking. People who use their right part of the brain, are usually more creative, artistic and that part of the brain processes information in an intuitive and simultaneous way, looking first at the whole picture then the details.On the other hand, left brain is processing information in an analytical and sequential way, looking first at the pieces then putting them together to get the whole.

The first movie may still be packing out multiplexes, but that hasn't stopped pre-production work from already beginning on Avatar 2, according to SlashFilm.

A source for the site reports that technical crew members are now being hired for the film and being made to sign three-to-five year deals.

This predictable turn of events (if true) probably has something to do with the fact that the first movie became the highest grossing movie of all time this week. 20th Century Fox will doubtless want another slice of Pandoran magic as quickly as possible to capitalize on Avatar-mania.

Do you guys want to see another entry in the series sooner rather than later? Or would you be happy if James Cameron took another 10 years on the film if it meant getting it right?

Throughout my life, music, constitute one of my biggest inspirations.In almost every project I had including, high school projects, I found my self inspired and influenced by music. I started developing my creativity at school, where I always took part in art and music lessons as much as I could. I always combined music with art because music is the way I take out my creativity. For instance, one of my favourite bands, Pink Floyd is one of my biggest inspirations today. Pink Floyd is a Rock/Psychedelic and really artistic band. Through the amazing psychedelic music, the artwork on the albums and especially the Rock Opera "The Wall", Pink Floyd inspire me and make me more creative than ever. Of course I did a lot of research behind that band so I can get as much as I can from their "piece of art".

Apart from music, significant inspirations to me are the circuses and the carnivals. Circuses and carnivals make me feel that I belong to their “magical, imaginary” world and by that I can create designs and pieces of art and as outcome I aim to make the audience to feel the same as I do. I reckon that if you explore these “worlds of imagination” you will discover really wonderful and special things. I like the mystery that surrounds these worlds and how artistic those people are. The costumes, the makeup, the magic tricks, the music are the main things that introduce you to these worlds and believe me is one of the most beautiful experiences that you can have. I recently watched the “Cirque Du Soleil – Varekai show”, one of the best circuses in the world, and I highly recommend it to you and by watching that you will feel all the above and you will have the chance of a two hours journey to their world.

Before I conclude to multimedia I was having some graphic design lessons at school for two years. However, after a research to related subjects, like multimedia, I found out that multimedia is the way for me to show my creativity. I was influenced from some friends, who were studying multimedia at that point and also from people who are already designers or artists. I check weekly some websites for 3D modelling and sculpturing and I found myself really excited when I’m looking at the work of others because I get new ideas and it helps me to develop the ideas I already have. In the future I aim to develop enough my creativity and skills, so I can achieve an outcome good enough to lead the audience to my world of music and carnivals.

Research is the weapon to achieve my goal. Doing a research you can gather many pieces of information from deferent sources and by analyzing those information you can set the right bases to develop and finally have a good outcome with your projects. Most of the times I take a first look in different sources and afterwards I get deeper in every single source and I gather as many information as possible. However, I keep in mind the interim research and sometimes combine it with the pilot stage research. In that way I can add more details as I’m looking to the progress. On the other hand I found exploratory research irrelevant because I don’t feel “safe” yet to use it. At that point I prefer to take a short look into sources and after develop it further.

Joker is a fictional character, a comic book supervillain published by DC Comics and appearing as the archenemy of Batman. Throughout his comic book appearances, the Joker is portrayed as a master criminal whose characterization has varied from that of a violent psychopath to a goofy trickster-thief. He has been directly responsible for numerous tragedies in Batman's life, including the paralysis of Barbara Gordon and the death of Jason Todd, the second Robin.
Throughout the character's long history, there have been several different origin tales; they most commonly depict him as falling into a vat of chemical waste, which bleaches his skin and turns his hair green and his lips bright red, giving him the appearance of a clown.

One Shot Film Room 151

This is the final piece for the one shot film. I found the whole experience of working with other people really interesting. My role in the film is about a guy who gets in the kitchen randomly and realizes that a woman was murdered. Things are getting complicated because as it seems there was a "conspiracy" behind the murder that leads me to arrest and eventually get shot. I think all the people in the group worked the same and there was a good comunication and understanting of the roles. Everyone has his own part, some were acting, some were filming and eventually we put all together with some piece of video editing and adding of audio.

Design Process

Discovering: Firstly, I became familiar with stop-motion animation when I saw the Tim Burton’s movie “Nightmare before Christmas”. Except from that I didn’t really know much about stop-motion, until the first week, where we made a group stop-motion animation and I realized how exactly it works. Afterwards I saw many videos on YouTube to get some ideas. I found a clip called Verdi-Traviata (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NDhHxIz83Ic) really interesting and I based my ideas on it. I’ m not even sure if it’s a stop-motion animation, but I found it really interesting because everything was made out of plasticine and it was like you create a character and afterwards give him live.

Developing: When I got the idea about plasticine and the making of a character, I was wondering how the whole creation will be start. I combined some white board animation with my idea. I thought of a really simple story, like a ring rolling around the white board and step by step starting to transform into a little man. In order to give it life I made some basic movements using hands and head mostly. However, I liked the idea of transformation so I add some more plastecine balls which one by one started to build in, on the little man changing him to a bigger and more detailed oblect. Finally I add a wizard hat and a stick to the character and did some more movements using the whole character this time.

Defining: The whole project was an experimentation of materials, especially plasticine(or clay). I wanted to familiarise with materials, creation of a figure or an object and finally bring it to life. this is going to help me understand further the sculpting and then digital sculpting which is something I’ m interested in, and furthermore how I animate a dead object. I might develop it more and try to make some smoother movements. Finally I aimed to show how a little dot could transform to a little man and make it looks real.

Delivering: The audience that I expect to watch my stop-motion animation are people who are looking for something fun and interesting and maybe people who are taking, also, their first steps in stop-motion animation and looking for ideas. I hope the impact to the audience, from my video, to be positive and make people look further about how many ways there are to create a stop-motion animation.

Project Natal is a code name for the new Xbox platform by Microsoft. Project Natal enables users to control and interact with the Xbox 360 without the need to touch a game controller through a natural user interface using gestures, spoken commands or presented objects and images.The project is aimed at broadening the Xbox 360's audience beyond its typically hardcore base. Project Natal was first announced on June 1, 2009 at E3 2009(Electronic Entertainment Expo 2009). Microsoft said that over a thousand software development kits began shipping to game developers that same day. Though Microsoft has not officially announced any price or release date projections for Project Natal. It is expected to be released in late 2010.
